Doctors forget 16-centimetre clamp in woman's belly
For months a woman in Lower Saxony complained of excruciating pain, and this week her doctors found a 16-centimetre surgical tool left in her abdomen during a previous operation, the hospital confirmed Thursday.
In May 2010 the woman underwent a gynaecological procedure at the facility in Holzminden, and later complained of severe abdominal pain. Only after some nine months did doctors locate the cause of the problem, and the 49-year-old went to another clinic to have the metal artery clamp removed.
Spokesman for the hospital Marco Ellerhoff said the surgeon responsible for the mishap has been fired.
He refused to provide further details on how the incident could have occurred.
The woman told daily Westfalen Blatt that the wound failed to heal properly and she could feel something hard under her skin – but the doctor who performed the operation said she was a hypochondriac.
The real reason for her pain was only determined after the hospital's head doctor took over her case in February this year, the paper said.
The hospital plans to make damage payments to the patient as soon as possible.
“We are in contact with our insurance and the patient,” Ellerhoff said.
