A man was shot in the backside by his pet dog after the canine accidentally pulled the trigger.

The unnamed 46-year-old was out on a duck hunting trip in the Great Salt Lake, Utah, when the shots from his 12-gauge shotgun went off, hitting him unexpectedly.

The gun had been placed on the bow of the canoe which the man had brought along for the trip. He was in the water setting up decoys, while a hunting colleague sat in the canoe with the dog nearby.

The dog began to jump around the canoe and mistakenly stepped on the gun's trigger, shooting his owner from 10 feet away.

Deputy sheriff Kevin Potter said: 'The dog did something to make the gun discharge. I don't know if the safety device was on.

'It's not impossible the dog could have taken it off safety.'

The incident left the man with only minor injuries as he was taken to hospital. He was hit with 27 birdshot pellets but his thick clothing helped to cushion the blows.

His friend who was in the boat wasn't hurt.

After having the pellets removed while at the hospital, and with no life-threatening injuries, the hunter was free to return home.
